2009 SAFF Cup Player Ratings: India 0-0 Maldives (3-1 Pen)

Goal.com rates the players on show at the Final of the 2009 SAFF Cup.

Sushil Kumar of India
INDIA

ARINDAM BHATTACHRYA: 9 - Got India out of trouble on more than a few occasion. Made brilliant saves to deny Ashfaq and Fazeel. Was utterly dominant in his box and rounded of a great tournament by saving two penalties in the shootout. Awarded the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.

ROWILSON RODRIGUES: 8 - The centre back pairing of Rowilson and Ravanan has been the key factor in India’s success in the tournament. On the night, the defender was incisive and brave. Put in a good shift against a very talented offence.

DHARMARAJ RAVANAN: 8 - Like his partner at the central defence, Ravanan has been invaluable for the Indian cause. Another great showing in the final to keep Ashfaq, Thoriq and co. at bay. Has a great name to go with his trade.

DENZIL FRANCO: 8 - The full back put in a few miles today which he had to in order to nullify Maldives wing play. Did his job efficiently. Took and absolute cracker of a penalty to start the proceedings.

ROBERT LALTHALMA: 6 - The left full back, though great with set piece deliveries, wasn’t upto the mark in open play. Saw a lot of the ball but was unable to pick the right pass. Defensively was decent.

BALDEEP SINGH: 7 - The central midfield partnership of Baldeep and Jewel had to on song today in order to get anything out of the game. And they did not disappoint. Although unable to dictate the play offensively, he worked hard to snap at the heels of the Maldives midfielders and broke play effectively.

JEWEL RAJA: 6 - Considering he came in as a third choice central midfielder, did his job effectively but made no major contribution. No mistake either.

JIBON SINGH: 6 -The midfielder probably got more time on the ball than any other Indian but was wasteful in possession. Got into good positions but was unable to do much with it. Took his penalty well.

JOAQUIM ABRANCHES: 6.5 - The winger has had a good tournament but failed to rise to the occasion today. Very little contribution in attack.

SUSHIL KUMAR: 6 - The front two of India let them down today. There was no urgency in their play. Should have harassed the Maldives defense more. Converted his penalty to keep the pressure.

BALWANT SINGH: 6 - Like his strike partner, was disappointing today. Hardly participated in the match.

Substitutes:

SUBODH KUMAR: 7 - Came on for the injured Jewel Raja and did a good job. Made a few well timed tackles to win the ball in midfield and had a good understanding with Baldeep Singh.

JEJE LAL PEKLUA: 6.5 - Worked hard, but never really got a chance to get into his stride as by the time he came on, the midfield had run themselves to the ground.

NIRMAL CHETTRI: N/A

MALDIVES:

MOHAMAD IMRAN: 5 - A poor show by the keeper. Fumbled too many crosses and was lucky that the Indian strikers couldn’t take advantage.

IBRAHIM SOBAH: 7 - The Maldives defence had an easy outing as the Indian forwards hardly put them under pressure. Did what was required.

JAMEEL MOHAMAD: 7 - Same as his partner. Hardly had anything to deal with. Did the required.

NASEER MUKHTAR:  7.5 - Along with Arif, the best player on the pitch. Made a number of runs down the right flank and was a thorn in India’s side. Unfortunately for him his strikers did not have a good game. Saw his penalty saved by an outstanding Arindam.

MOHAMAD IBRAHIM: 6.5 - Was decent in possession and made no mistakes. Like his colleagues, was really challenged enough to work hard.

GHASIM SHAMSEEL: 6.5 -  Was made to work hard as the Indian midfield ran their heart out. Did the simple things well but was unable to making a telling pass.

UMAIR MOHAMAD: 7 - The midfielder had a good outing. Stretched the Indian midfield well and distributed well. Was unable to make the killer pass though.

ABDUL GHANI: 6 - The midfielder had a very quite game and wasn’t able to impose himself on the Indian full backs. Found it difficult to beat a man and mostly played lateral passes.

ARIF MEHMOOD: 8 - Easily the best player on the pitch. Hardly put a foot wrong. Broke play efficiently and effectively. Started almost all of Maldives attack. Rose up to the occasion and put in a great shift.

AHMED THORIQ: 6.5 - A lot was expected of the tournament’s highest scorer but he failed to impress. Had a few half chances but was unable to convert. Will be disappointed after having a great tournament.

ALI ASHFAQ: 7.5 - Had a slightly mixed outing. At times  he ran circles around the Indian defence and at times he missed simple touches. Had a few decent chances to score but it just wasn’t his day. Set piece delivery was very poor. Missed his penalty to hand India the victory.

Substitutes:

ALI ASAD: 7 - Did well after coming on in extra time. Ran at the Indian defence winning a few free kicks and looked lively in possession.

IBRAHIM FAZEEL: 7 - The striker had been injured for the match and thus started on the bench. He certainly didn’t look his sharpest as he missed a few half chances which he generally tends to convert. Made intelligent movements but lacked the finishing touch.
