Not often do you come across footballers who love to read books. The names of Chelsea legend and current West Ham boss, Gianfranco Zola and Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs come to mind on the European scene. In India, Renedy Singh is known to read biographies of footballers while Bhaichung Bhutia does go through health magazines.

“My hobby is to read motivational books. The last book I read was The Magic of Thinking Big,” said Manish Maithani, who has taken to heart the thought presented in the Dr.David Schwartz book wherein he proves that one doesn’t need to have an inborn talent to achieve success but has to think and behave in a manner which shall get the person to his or her desired goal.

And indeed, it has brought dividends to the 22 year old from Dehradoon as he finds himself in the India U-23 camp to be held in Goa from next week; and all this after just two months of playing in the country’s top league!

Maithani started his professional career with Amity United and after two seasons joined the Hindustan FC. It was from Indian National that he joined the ranks of Mohun Bagan in the summer.

“Bernard, who was my coach, spoke to Mohun Bagan officials and they decided to take me. I am very thankful to Karim Bencherifa, our coach at Mohun Bagan, as he showed faith in me.

“As a player it’s very important for you to get your chances, and he believed in me. I played in the derby and that was a big boost. What I like about him is that he grooms the players very well and corrects them, which is very essential.”

Maithani has never been part of the national set-up but was called earlier for the India U-23 camp in 2006 but never really joined it.

“I got a letter from the AIFF which said that those boys playing the Santosh Trophy must continue playing in the tournament. After the games, I wasn’t called,” Maithani remembered.

Climax Lawrence is a player which almost every Indian midfielder wants to be like and the Bachelor of Arts graduate and the Master of Business Administration (MBA) student is no different.

“Internationally, I feel Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard are the best. In India, Climax Lawrence and N.P.Pradeep have to be the best as they play for India,” said the Manchester United fan.

Having finished the first phase of the I-League with a 3-1 victory over Pune FC, what’s next on his mind apart from the national camp?

“I am looking for this book called ‘Power, Passion and Purpose: 7 Steps To Energizing Your Life.’ I searched for it in several bookstores and even at the Park Street but couldn’t find it. For now, I need to get that book,” said Maithani.

And the youngster has taken a few steps already to energise his life!
