I-League: Churchill Defender Rowilson Rodrigues Happy To Be In The SAFF Cup Squad
The 22 year old is looking forward to the regional tournament and also aspires to feature in the 2011 Asia Cup.
The defender expressed his delight on making the squad and remained hopeful of a place in the senior squad in future.
Speaking to Goal.com he said, “Playing for your country is the ultimate dream of any footballer so I am very happy to be in the SAFF Cup squad.
“I have to keep working hard and improve in every game because consistency is very important to be a regular in the national team.
“My long term aim is to be in the 2011 Asia Cup squad but for now I have to concentrate on Churchill’s next game.”
The 22 year old then talked about his admiration for Dempo’s Mahesh Gawli and also explained how the presence of Gouramangi Singh and Odafa Onyeka Okolie helps him.
“Among Indian players Mahesh Gawli is the one player I look up to. He is a complete defender.
“It's great to play alongside Gouramangi. He is a very talented player with whom I have formed a very good partnership.
"He has a lot of experience after playing for the national team so he always keeps talking to me on how to improve on certain aspects of my game.
“Odafa is the best player I have played with so far in my career. It is difficult to play against him in training also and that eventually helps me to deal with opposition strikers.”
Rowilson joined Churchill after graduating from the Sesa Football Academy. He revealed that he is enjoying playing for the champions and will be relishing the occasion of playing in AFC competitions this season.
“I am very happy at Churchill. Everyone here is great and after winning the title last season we want to retain it this time.
"We will also be playing in Asian competitions so it’s a big season ahead.”
Churchill haven’t made the best of starts this season as they have already dropped six points in four matches. Rowilson stated that their results have to improve if they want to retain the I-League.
“We have dropped some silly points so we cant afford any of that anymore. We have had opportunities to win every game but we have been a little wasteful.
“It is important for us to be consistent now or else others will move far ahead than us,” he concluded.
Churchil have a home tie in the fifth round against newly promoted Pune FC on Wednesday evening.
