2010 AFC Challenge Cup: India Drawn With World Cuppers DPR Korea In Group B

The defending champions are in a tough group...

Holders India have been placed in the same group as 2010 FIFA World Cup participant DPR Korea in the 2010 AFC Challenge Cup. The two countries have been drawn in Group B along with Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan.

The third edition of this biennial tournament which is contested among the emerging countries of Asia, will be held in Sri Lanka between 16th and 27th February.

The top three teams from the last edition – India, Tajikistan and DPR Korea gained automatic qualification while five other countries –Myanmar, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh progressed through the qualifiers.

On Monday, the final draw for the tournament was held at the Galadari Hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The other group consists of 2006 champions and 08 runner-up Tajikistan, last edition’s semi-finalists Myanmar and the South Asian duo of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Like in the 2009 SAFF Cup, India are likely to take an Under-23 squad for this tournament also. They have been clearly placed in the tougher of the two groups so defending the title won’t be easy.

The top two teams will qualify for the semis and the eventual champions will qualify for the final rounds of the 2011 AFC Asia Cup to be held in Qatar.


In case already qualified India successful retains the trophy then the runner-up country will qualify for Qatar 2011.

Group A: Tajikistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh

Group B: India, DPR Korea, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan
