The Indian national coach mentioned that the player must make up his mind and inform whether he can be a part of the Asian Games squad or not..
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu has sealed a move to Norway’s FK Stabek last week but his presence in the Asian Games squad remains up in the air.
It must be noted that the former East Bengal goalkeeper was named in the 30-man probables back in June but was excused from attending the camp in Bangaloe as he was on trials in Norway.
On being pressed whether Sandhu would be a part of the Asian Games side now that he has signed for the Norwegian club, Wim Koevermans was terse in his answer.
“It’s as simple as this: We have been in touch with Gurpreet Sandhu from the 10th of August. But we haven’t heard any clearances from their side (FK Stabaek). The process in Norway, that is hindering him, has nothing to do with us,” he explained.
Koevermans added that the onus is the on goalkeeper to take charge of the situation and inform whether he wishes to be a part of the India Under-23 squad.
“We invited him to join the squad. He’s still not here. So I believe now is the time for the player to take the initiative and let us know.”
