In a decision which was expected for the last few months, Sukhwinder Singh shall take over the reins of the India U-23 side. His resignation was accepted by the JCT management on Thursday.

India national coach Bob Houghton was highly impressed with Sukhwinder Singh and his work with the Punjab side as year after year; they came out with new set of youngsters. The Englishman had spoken to the experienced coach a few months back and also recommended his name in the last All India Football Federation (AIFF) Executive Committee Meeting.

“I resigned after the October 20th meeting of the AIFF. Bob had spoken to me about this assignment a few months back. I knew about this a lot earlier,” said Sukhwinder Singh.

The 61 year old was on the JCT employees list and was to retire last year but was given an extension after having guided the team from 1991.

“It was a question of national interest. We’ll play three international tournaments with AFC Challenge Cup being the most important one,” added Sukhwinder.

He shall officially leave JCT following their game in Mumbai against Mumbai FC on the eighth of next month.

Interestingly, Sukhwinder’s official designation with JCT was that of a general secretary and the technical director as opposed to being the head coach. Parminder was named as the head coach as the AIFF wanted the clubs to have coaches with the necessary 'A' licence in compliance with the Asian Football Confederation's (AFC) rules.

“Officially, it is Parminder who is the chief coach but we have an understanding here at JCT as it’s a family atmosphere.”
