The Sikkimese Sniper hailed the talents of his former colleague but added that the latter could have continued for another year or so…
Bhaichung Bhutia believes that Climax Lawrence should have donned the Indian national team jersey for a year more on the day when the Dempo SC midfielder announced retirement from international football.
The 33 year old was disappointed after the news broke of him being dropped from the India probable squad for the Challenge Cup.
Climax, who has been a regular in the national team set-up for more than a decade, was surprised by this decision of coach Savio Medeira who had publicly defended the former skipper stating that “performance, and not the age, is what counts when picking a national team.”
“I would say that he was one of the greatest midfielders of our generation. I believe he could have continued for one more year. He could have been retained for some more time,” said Bhaichung
“I retired when I was 34 and he has just turned 33. However that is his personal decision. He has been a consistent performer and has served the country over the years,” he added.
Bhaichung hailed the professionalism of Climax and labeled him as one of the best “gentlemen” he has come across.
“He was a good professional in and out of the field. He was a very quiet and nice guy. I would say one of the best gentlemen in the game.”
