On the eve of his testimonial match against Bayern Munich, Bhaichung Bhutia left a door open for making a comeback into the national scheme of things.
The Sikkimese Sniper, having played 107 matches for India and scoring 49 goals in the process, stated that a return into the national side would only happen if the country “needs his services” which though, he feels, is highly unlikely.
“I hope that stage of me making a comeback doesn’t come. However if there is a need tomorrow, I shall comeback.

“I am confident that the current set of youngsters in the national squad is able enough. I hope and pray that I am not called again,” said Bhutia.
On being asked as to what was the most memorable moment in his career, he replied, “Most people would know as it is the hundredth time I am answering that. I think qualifying for the Asian Cup was the biggest achievement; when we won the Challenge Cup.”
Over the last year, Bhaichung’s priorities have changed given that he has a club to take care of.
“I have been busy with United Sikkim club and Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools over the last 10 months. I think it’s important to work at the grassroot level. I personally feel that we need to reach out to kids.”
Bayern Munich’s Bastian Schweinsteiger, having recovered from his collar bone injury, stated that his recovery has been good unless “Bhaichung doesn’t go after my shoulder, its fine!”
Responding to the German midfielder, Bhutia said that if the scoreline in tomorrow’s game exceeds 3-0, that would be the time to “target the shoulder of Schweinsteiger.”
