Indian National Team: Climax Lawrence & Baljit Sahni Back In Training But Samir Naik Still Injured

Bob Houghton’s team training in Lisbon now…

After training for a month and playing two friendly matches in Vierra the Indian national team is now having their camp in Lisbon.

The Indian players are currently using the facilities of the Sporting Lisbon academy and are scheduled to play a number of friendly matches in the Portuguese capital.

At present the Indian squad consists of 28 players but both Bhaichung Bhutia and Sunil Chhetri will be joining them soon as they leave for Portugal on Wednesday.

Midfielder Climax Lawrence and young Baljit Singh Sahni are back in training after missing out on both the practice matches due to injury. However Dempo defender Samir Naik is yet recover from his injury and is therefore still missing from training.

Goal.com caught up with midfielder Mehrajuddin Wadoo to get an update on the Portugal camp.


In Lisbon Now

Speaking to Goal.com he said, “The academy here in Sporting Lisbon has top class facilities and the atmosphere also is fantastic.

“We are training hard and eagerly looking forward to the upcoming friendly matches where we wil face much tougher opponents.”

The Kashmiri also looked back on the two practice matches, in which India scored ten goals.

“I think both matches we played really well. The match against Caldas was our first after a long time but still we won convincingly.


Back In Midfield

“In the second game we conceded early but showed great character to fight back and win comfortably in the end. Both matches were a good runout for all of us and personally for me it was a nice experience also as I played in midfield after a long time.”

Mehraj signed off by congratulating teammate Deepak Mandal for becoming the first footballer to win the Arjuna Award since 2002.

“His (Deepak Mandal) contributions to the national team and for clubs over the years have been priceless.

“I am very happy for him and I feel he should have got it much earlier but now that he is finally being awarded is a great achievement. He fully deserves it,” he concluded.
