Indian National Team: Dempo SC Refuse To Let Their Injured Players Join The National Camp

We won’t budge has been the message sent out by Dempo SC to the Indian FA...

I-League: Mahesh Gawli of Dempo SC (Mango Peel)
In a key decision taken by the Dempo management, the club has refused to release two of their players to the national camp despite the All India Football Federation (AIFF) dishing out a letter over the same over the last few days.

Sameer Naik and Mahesh Gawli missed a number of games for Dempo in the I-League due to their hamstring and knee injuries, with the latter not participating in a single I-League game so far.

The Indian national camp began earlier this week on Monday but the two players have been categorically asked not to join as they are yet to heal from their injuries.

It is reliably learnt that the club answered the AIFF and mentioned that the two players shall join once they have recovered fully and are fit enough.

Earlier this month, there was a similar case with the world’s most expensive footballer Cristiano Ronaldo when he was at the centre of a club versus country row.

While Real Madrid weren’t pleased with the Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz who named the injured star in his squad for the twin World Cup play-offs against Bosnia and Herzegovina, eventually CR9 did undergo a medical under the supervision of the national team staff.

FIFA rules state that a player may not leave his city and have a medical conducted by the national staff in the city where he is registered, if he so desires. In the present case, since the camp is held in the same state, arranging a medical for the two players wouldn’t be difficult for the India team medical staff.

Article 29, Annex I, Paragraph 4 of the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players reads as follows:

"A player who due to injury or illness is unable to comply with a call-up from the association that he is eligible to represent on the basis of his nationality shall, if the association so requires, agree to undergo a medical examination by a doctor of that association’s choice. If the player so wishes, such medical examination shall take place on the territory of the association at which he is registered (in Naik and Sameer’s case, in Goa).”

Meanwhile, Indian skipper Bhaichung Bhutia has been released from the camp  after an MRI revealed a calf muscle tear.
