Indian National Team: Dempo Duo Yet To Join India Camp

Two players are yet to join the national camp...

I-League: Mahesh Gawli of Dempo SC (Mango Peel)
While Real Madrid were hesitant to release an injured Cristiano Ronaldo for the crucial 2010 World Cup play-offs for Portugal, there seems to be a similar case in India.  Mahesh Gawli and Sameer Naik haven’t yet joined the senior national camp in Goa as they are recuperating from their respective injuries and were reportedly advised by their club, Dempo SC to join only after completing their recovery.

Both players haven’t played a significant part of the first eight games of the I-League with Gawli not having featured in a single game as he sustained a knee injury while playing in a Goa League match before their I-League opener against Mumbai FC.

Sameer has been suffering from a recurring hamstring problem and is yet to achieve his full fitness.

“I seemed to have recovered but got injured again in the training session,” said Gawli.

It is believed that the All India Football Federation (AIFF) have written to Dempo SC to release the two players for the camp. Gawli is also expected to undergo an MRI scan on his knee later on Wednesday to determine the seriousness of the injury.

“I don’t think it’s very serious as I am able to walk comfortably,” informed Gawli.
