2009 SAFF Cup: India To Play Their First Match Against Afghanistan

Last edition’s runner up India will open their 2009 SAFF Cup campaign against Afghanistan.

India are placed in Group A along with Afghanistan,  Nepal and defending champions Maldives. Bob Houghton’s team play their first match against Afghanistan on December 5th.

India’s other group games are on 7th and 9th December against Nepal and Maldives respectively.

Group B comprises of hosts Bangladesh, Bhutan, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The inaugural match will be played between Bangladesh and Bhutan.

All the fifteen matches of this eight nation regional tournament will be played at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semis.

India who have won the SAFF Cup four times, have announced an Under-23 squad for the tournament.

Group A- India, Afghanistan, Nepal & Maldives

Group B- Bangladesh, Bhutan, Pakistan & Sri Lanka

Dec 4: Sri Lanka v Pakistan; Bangladesh v Bhutan

Dec 5: Maldives v Nepal; India v Afghanistan

Dec 6: Sri Lanka v Bhutan; Bangladesh v Pakistan

Dec 8: Pakistan v Bhutan; Bangladesh v Sri Lanka

Dec 9: Afghanistan v Nepal; Maldives v India

Dec 11: Semifinals
