Pune FC and India goalkeeper Subrata Paul was announced as the Indian Player of the Year at the AIFF's Annual General Body Meeting on Tuesday, and who could disagree with their choice?

Not Pune FC's coach Derrick Pereira, that's for sure. Goal.com caught up with the delighted coach soon after the announcement was made, informed him about the same, and he had nothing but positive things to say about the Bengali glovesman.

Pereira said, "I'm really happy for him, and he's deserved it completely. He has done so very well in the last three tournaments that India has won. his efforts had to be rewarded, and now they have been. He is a great goalkeeper."

This honour for Paul makes the fact that Pereira managed to sign him in the summer even more praiseworthy. Pereira went on to explain a bit about how he managed to get the former East Bengal keeper to Pune.

Pereira elaborated, "I was on the lookout for a top goalkeeper, who would give our defence a lot more confidence. I happened to know that he was available, I contacted him, and luckily for us, everything fell into place. He's been a blessing to Pune FC, and inspirational for the rest of the boys."

So did he need to convince the goalie to join Pune FC? "See, he was clear in his mind. He did have other options, but he wanted to join a professional side with a professional set up. He chose to come to Pune, and we are fortunate to have him."

Pereira was equally vocal in his praise for Paul's performances in the league so far. He said, "He has been excellent whenever we have needed him in the three games till now. He is a leader, and pushes the lads when they are down. He is extremely determined and committed."

Since Pereira spoke of Paul's leadership skills, the question was inevitable. Does he see him as India captain one day? Pereira was straightforward in his reply.

"Absolutely. He can definitely captain the Indian side. He is a team player, and I have seen no negatives in him so far. If he keeps up his performances, which I'm sure he will, he will have a great future", Pereira concluded.
