The year's first Kolkata derby is also the 300th time that the arch-rivals East Bengal will face off against Mohun Bagan on the occasion of a league encounter in the Calcutta Football League. There is slim chance of Mohun Bagan winning the CFL as East Bengal currently enjoy a 7 point advantage over them. However points, positions and form are all flung out of the window in derby encounters where it is passion that drives the players to perform. While East Bengal will look to settle the CFL, Mohun Bagan will look to salvage pride by going one up on their rivals.

After the contentious penalty that led to Mohun Bagan winning the last encounter between the two in the I-league, the East Bengal camp were vociferous in complaining about the referee in the match.

In a surprising turn of events, the IFA decided this time around to avoid all controversies and has appointed a referee of the highest international standards. Ravshan Sayfiddinovich Irmatov was the best referee in Asia for three consecutive years (2008-11) and has experience at the highest levels.

Football watchers will be familiar with the man who blew the whistle between the 2010 Fifa World Cup Semi Final encounter between Holland and Uruguay. More recently he also officiated the match between Santos and FC Barcelona in the Club World Cup Final, 2011.

Irmatov when asked how he felt quipped, "There is no difference between officiating any match whether it is the world cup or the club world cup or this upcoming match"

He, however. said he felt happy to be in Kolkata and could not wait to officiate a match in the more than 100,000 seater Salt Lake Stadium.
