Calcio Debate: The Gap Between Inter & Juventus Has Increased, Not Decreased

Goal Italia's Sergio Stanco believes week eight has illustrated the major gap that divides Inter into the category of masters, and Juventus into artisans in need of a new coach...

Ciro Ferrara - Juventus (Grazia Neri)
In his final press conference following the home win against Udinese, and prior to the Genoa match, Jose Mourinho claimed "You don't buy character at the supermarket." He was right, and, unfortunately for Juventus fans, you cannot buy personality or experience either.

After Inter's 5-0 win against Genoa there isn't much to add. As we have said since August, the Nerazzurri are in a league of their own. They are far stronger than an over-evaluated competition who remain competitive for those who only dream about having a balanced league.

Week eight has taught us that Juventus have not reduced the gap, but they have increased it. When an already strong side without Zlatan Ibrahimovic adds players like Lucio, Wesley Sneijder, Diego Milito, and Samuel Eto'o, it's hard to understand where the critics, who like to paint the picture of a black and white Scudetto, get their anti-Inter ammunition from.

Eto'o & Inter Are On Another Level

As things stand, the Old Lady would be wise to take a look behind as they are not superior to Fiorentina, and this was evident from the game at the Olimpico. It was Cesare Prandelli's men who were closer to winning, not Ciro Ferrara's. Juventus are not even ahead of Luigi Del Neri's Sampdoria, one of the brightest teams in the league.

The Juventus we saw against Fiorentina was a team that seemed short of fitness, without ideas, and very far from the side fans have been dreaming of. Diego and Felipe Melo are the reflections of a period of difficulty. The former was signed to be the trequartista, who plays just behind the strikers, yet Diego wants to be the regista in midfield, the director of the side who organises the play. Melo should be the defensive fortification in the middle-of-the-park, yet he insists on affecting the play near the box, turning Gianluigi Buffon's hair grey in the process.

The two Brazilians who should have raised the team onto the Inter platform, have instead lowered them down a grade. They are the symbol of confusion at Juve, and Ferrara has done nothing to fix this.

Ferrara's analytical views of his sides games leave a sense of perplexity. "Yes, maybe some players are tired." In October? What about when we get to May? "Maybe Diego does play a bit too deep." So, tell him this. "Maybe he does this when we play long ball, and so he remains out of the play. We have to find him more." Right, it's probably like this. But then a doubt is clearly raised...perhaps Juventus need another coach.
