TFA Knock East Bengal out of IFA Shield, Nirmal Chettri Injured
Kolkata giants East Bengal were knocked out of the IFA Shield today as the youngsters from the Tata Football Academy overcame their much-glorified opponents 3-1 in Kolkata today.
East Bengal's season got off to the worst possible start, as a defeat to the Tata Football Academy meant that their IFA Shield campaign is over for this year. The young boys from Jamshedpur put in an inspired performance to win 3-1, after trailing 1-0 at half time.
Rahim Nabi gave East Bengal the lead in the 40th minute when he tapped in a cross from Saikat Saha, but Jagtar Singh equalized in the 62nd minute after goalkeeper Abhra Mondal missed the flight of the ball completely. Irrfan Khan's header in the 87th minute gave the Jharkhand side the lead, and Robin Singh finished the scoring two minutes later to complete a dramatic victory for the visitors.
If that wasn't enough, the red and gold side's young defender Nirmal chettri limped off with a knee injury in the first half. Speaking later to Goal.com, an upset Nirmal said, "We never thought we would lose this game. However, these things happen in football, and we have to move on". Coach Subhash Bhowmick looked distraught after the game, and Nirmal agreed that it was a tough moment for his coach. "He didn't say much after the game, and I feel for him at this point, but we need to look forward now", he said.
About his young opponents, Nirmal had good things to say. He went on, "They're a young side, and taught us a lesson or two today. They were really aggressive and up for the game, as it was a good platform for them to showcase their skills."
When asked about how the fans and media would respond to this result, especially as East Bengal had an elaborate pre-season, where they visited Myanmar, Chettri responded, "The tour of Myanmar helped us a lot. We worked a lot on our fitness and are in good physical shape now. It's just that we need to continue working hard, and be more together as a unit."
The former Air India defender limped off in the first half due to a knee problem and admitted to not knowing how serious the injury is. He elaborated, "It was due to a bad tackle, and it got worse because I ran with it for ten more minutes. I wont come to know until tomorrow or day after how serious it is. I've been working hard on my fitness since pre-season, but unfortunately the tackle caught me in the knee, and I had to come off."
The IFA Shield action continues tomorrow, as Mohun Bagan take on George Telegraph.
