Nehru Cup: Fans React To India's Opening Day Defeat
Goal.com's Subhankar Mondal compiles a list of comments and reactions left by the Indian football fans after the nation's 1-0 defeat to Lebanon in the opening match of the Nehru Cup on Wednesday.....
Ishan from Delhi analyses India coach Bob Houghton's strategy, "i was there in ambedkar and saw the match live. Yes grass was an issue BUT for both the teams. Lebanon played a beautiful one touch passing game for most of the time game whereas indias strategy was and always has been long ball game. bhutia and chetri are really good but even they cannot out jump 6`6 tall defenders .they were outnumbered and overpowered by the Lebanese defenders as the Indian midfield was nowhere to be seen.all in all it was a good performance but we need to improve! a lot."
Murali from London, UK echoes his thoughts, "This is not we wanted..This is not Bob asked for...I know we played well from somewhere around the mid-first half mark and the whole of the second and you could also see Lebanon tiring at the end..and a couple of wrong decisions gone against us but there should be no excuses...its going to be very tough..gotta mountain to climb now..looks like Syr vs Leb Final."
Anselm in Dubai/Goa takes a rather positive view of the defeat and says, "Its all about having faith in the Team, If India has to do well it is only with the support of the fans, dissapointments will be there,India may be unlucky and not win any match in the Nehru cup so what? the main thing is that there is a forward movement in India football and we the fans should be the Heart of Indian Football, We should be the driving force to See Indian football at the top and be bogged down by some crappy Fake Indian Sports Journalist in our Indian News papers."
Hemant Sharma from New Delhi thinks likewise, "Mates find positive things india really played well that was just our bad luck nothing else there were atleast three chances to score."
Anki from Delhi too is impressed with India's performance, "I don't think 1-0 is a fair reflection of India performance on the field. India dominated in the both half but only starting 10 minute lacklasture play cost them the match. Although their passing and finishing desired lots to. Lebanon is the strongest team in the fray as Syrian are depleted side....I think India will makes to the final."
Santhanam from Chennai, though, is not very sure, "Indian players don't have physical stamina to match out their opponents. Baichung has become old - he hardly runs. We need long term plan folks. We need to make sure more young people take up this sport. And i am really anguished with the media coverage of the sport. Not everyone gets zee sports to watch at home. It is really disappointing. What is sports ministry doing?"
He further says, "Friends, it is really not about training in barca or not. One has to look at Iraq - when they won the Asia cup, their country was into tatters, there was no one faility for them to train. Can any one disagree? They did not have any foriegn trainng camps. It is intent and motiavation that takes you to the peak. Imagine no coverage of this match even in DD National Channel. How are we going to promote football in India. Not a single news channel speaks about indian football match more than a min."
arun from kollam is very pessimistic, "This is the standard of Indian team ,failed against a team ranking 148,then wat will happen in asia cup????wat abt nehru trophy????"
Rakesh from India hits it hard, "Training @ barcelona has become vedas to buffallos."
Joseph from Goa takes a considerate approach but is equally emphatic, "I have two pressing questions to our coach. Why on earth was the highly experienced number one defender in our country left out of the first eleven? To the uninitiated its Mahesh Gawli. Why i say that is because he has played taller opposition when playing for dempo the previous season. Second !!! Why was Surkumar Singh not substituted during the entire match even when knowing he is having a bad day. I believe Renedy would have done justice to the right side. Wrong choices by the coach."
munna from USA wonders, "I am sure bob houghton must have seen the stadium atleast once before the match. He should have told them that grass is bigger. Also with all respect to independence day, cant we hold such festivities in those hundreds of parks and grounds of Delhi. Why only Ambedkar Stadium?????? Leave some places for players, sports and fans. we hardly have any training facilities/grounds and whatever we have r taken away for dandia, film nights, political rallies."
Kumar from Kerala becomes sarcastic and says, "Bob Houghton's excuses seems very funny. First time in the world history a team losses because of grass."
