4-3 Valencia

Alvaro Negredo could not have handled his Confederations Cup snub by Spain boss Vicente del Bosque any better. The Sevilla striker admitted that his omission had disappointed but not surprised him and rather humbly and magnanimously extolled the virtues of every forward that had been selected ahead of him.

The common denominator, Negredo pointed out, was goals - so he responded with goals. Four of them, in fact, as los Rojiblancos denied Valencia a place in next season's Champions League with a stirring 4-3 win over los Che in a thrilling final-day encounter at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

It was a particularly sweet and satisfying evening for Negredo because, as Spanish football writer Ben Hayward explains, the four-goal haul not only sent a message to Del Bosque, it also earned the 27-year-old the Zarra Trophy and saw him make a little bit of history.

He enthused: "Negredo, who has been strongly linked with a move this summer, took his tally to 25 in La Liga (from just 34 games) to overtake Soldado, who hit two in the same game, and finish as the highest Spanish scorer.

"In doing so, Negredo also became only the second Spain international to rack up 100 goals in La Liga since the turn of the century - 12 minutes before Soldado repeated the feat.

"His first goal, a spectacular bicycle kick, was the pick of a bunch that will have no doubt added a few million euro to his price tag - much to Sevilla's delight."

Congratulations to Alvaro Negredo, Goal's 212th World Player of the Week winner!
