Robin van Persie has completed his United medical on Thursday and Goal.com probes the reason as to why this deal will help the club in more ways than one.

Aureliano De Laurentiis announced that coveted striker Edinson Cavani will cost €100m. FC Porto want €40m at least for wide striker Hulk. Yes, it's really the season for overpricing strikers, isn't it? But then, obscene asking amounts for strikers have been the norm more than the exception post Shevchenko's €34m move to Chelsea.
|Total: 80 million pounds| How much was van Persie bought for again?|
So in that climate, getting a proven striker in the sub-€25 million range seems almost impossible. Yet, who's there to pull the rabbit out of the hat once again? Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United. They can really give themselves a pat on the back for being able to bring in last season's top scorer in the Premier League and potential threat to United's title challenge, Robin van Persie from Arsenal. Forget that he is a 29 year old and has had a injury ridden past. Just a couple of months back, if someone would have said that they would sign van Persie from Arsenal for the €25m or so, Arsene Wenger would have simply smiled at the proposition for its naivety given how highly regarded he is for the class he possesses.
They say if you can't beat them, join them and that is exactly what Manchester United have convinced Captain Vantastic to do. Arsenal fans ans might be bitter about how van Persie left after effectively one and a half good seasons but it is the fact that he has been bought for the ability he has shown in that period, and not whatever he might have been before.
|Vindicated| Ferguson's sudden burst of desire hasn't left Man Utd red-faced|
Another important subtext is that it has also vindicated Sir Alex Ferguson's uncharacteristic outburst of desire where the usually tight-lipped Scotsman spoke of his desire to bring the unhappy striker to Manchester in familiar red.
The 59 goals he scored in 2010 to 2012 has been deemed well worth the €24m sanctioned for him. But much more importantly, it has firmly re-established the Manchester United brand back where it belongs, as one of the most desirable in the world. Competing against Manchester City for the Dutchman's signature, it's subtle power dynamics shifting a little in United's favour, both in terms of the mood of their fans as well as sending out the message that United can always spend if they want.
|Just at €9m less than Rvp | van Persie against Rodwell will be a boost for United fans|
If Man City end this transfer window having only signed Jack Rodwell, it would give a massive psychological boost for the whole team and the club in general to have outgunned City in terms of signing a star at a bargain price. It is a sobering thought for the Blue half of Manchester that they bought the boy from Everton at close to €9m less than what United bought van Persie for.
Oh, and we might not have mentioned it, but van Persie is a genius up front. A complete striker in every sense of the term. Both feet, head, free-kicks, speed, strength. Everything. But whether he does click in the United set-up will be an interesting one to see. The Dutchman is now showing at the Theatre of Dreams.
