Chelsea are the new kings of Europe, United have won 19 titles and Everton finished above Liverpool! Should the Reds still live in their 'glorious past'? Sarthak Dubey comments...
1.) Its 22 years since Liverpool were league champions:
They aren't playing any more...
Apart from a Champions League crown in 2005 and a couple of domestic cups here and there, Liverpool Football Club have failed to win any major trophy. As they are proud English League champions for a record 18 times, the Merseyside club quite obviously take great pleasure in swimming in the sweet memories of the past. Their last Premiership title came under the great Kenny Dalglish in 1989-90. But aren't we living in the present?
2.) Using your financial resources:
Downing: 36 games, 0 goals, 0 assists in Premier League
It is a known fact that money is available with the Reds now. The Fenway Sports Group (FSG) is an American sports investment company, now pumping financial resources into Liverpool along with Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox and Roush Fenway Racing, a NASCAR team. It's how they use that money. Buying players like Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson have been horrendous decisions. Unless the money is used to buy the right players, the Reds would remain a club of the 'glorious past'.
3.) Inconsistency after winning a trophy:
Perhaps their last glorious moment...
After beating AC Milan in Istanbul from a 3-0 deficit, the Merseysiders have only gone downhill. A six year trophy draught saw famous players leave the club and sub-standard players replacing them. Whereas a club like Chelsea have been consistent in winning trophies, maintained league form and recovered from any 'hiccup seasons' by earning silverware immediately next season. After a dreadful 8th place finish this season, Liverpool are going nowhere.
4.) Arch rivals getting stronger:
Under Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United have surpassed Liverpool's tally of 18 titles and quite easily won bragging rights over their fierce rivals. Chelsea have become the kings of London thanks to a European crown, three Premier League titles and several domestic cups. Manchester City are the new Premier League champions while Tottenham and Newcastle United are certaiinly a force to reckon with. Arsenal are easily more attractive than Liverpool. And saving the best for the last - cross town rivals Everton finished above them in 7th place!
5.) Liverpool Stats verdict: Worst season ever!
Presided the best and worst at Liverpool
Liverpool have never had a season in which both their points and goal per game ratios were so low at 1.3. The closest is 1923-24, when they recorded 41 points in 42 games (0.98) and 49 goals (1.17). Their home form has been pathetic and surprisingly, the worst in the club's history - Winning only 6 out of 19 games at Anfield, ie, 31% . We need to go back to 1953-54 for the last time when they won so few, seven of 21 in the relegation season.
