MARCELO

Pablo Alvarez started at right-back for Real Zaragoza against Getafe in Madrid but spent much of his time in midfield. He was important in getting attacks moving down his flank and was important in his side’s 2-0 victory that ensured the Aragons retain their top-flight status. Sergio Ballesteros played an equally significant role in Levante finishing sixth in La Liga, as he stood tall and strong in defence in their 3-0 win against Athletic Bilbao in the their final league game of the season.

Pepe and Marcelo were the two other outstanding defenders in the final round of games in Spain, as champions Real Madrid wrapped up their 2011-12 campaign with a 4-1 victory over Real Mallorca at the Santiago Bernabeu. Pepe was Los Blancos’ best defender in the game and gave an accomplished performance at the back, while Marcelo’s attacking forays were wonderful with the Brazilian creating Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal with a pinpoint cross.

Ivan RAKITIC
Sevilla

Seydou Keita spared Barcelona’s blushes in Pep Guardiola's final league in charge of the Catalans as the Malian scored an injury-time equaliser against Real Betis with a fine header in their 2-2 draw in Seville. Raul Garcia had yet another brilliant game for Osasuna in midfield, as he netted once in their 4-2 away triumph over Racing Santander and was a huge presence in midfield. Ivan Rakitic failed to inspire Sevilla to a win at Espanyol, but he could not be blamed for not trying. He went close to scoring for the Rojiblancos and it was one of his several crosses that was eventually turned home by Alvaro Negredo in a match that ended 1-1.

Mesut OZIL
Real Madrid
TOTW Apps: 7

Mesut Ozil finished another successful league campaign with Real Madrid on a positive note, as he scored twice in Los Blancos’ victory over Mallorca at home. The Germany international playmaker had one of his best games on Sunday and almost set up Gonzalo Higuain in the second half as well.

FORWARDS

Raul TAMUDO
Rayo Vallecano

Abdelkader GHEZZAL
Levante
TOTW Apps: 1

Rayo Vallecano were set to go down to the Spanish Segunda Division as they were drawing 0-0 with Granada at home. But then along came Raul Tamudo. The veteran Spanish striker came off the bench in the 76th minute and popped up in injury time to score the winning goal with a close-range header.

Levante won against Bilbao at home amidst less spectacular circumstances, but Abdelkader Ghezzal’s brace was crucial in securing his side a Europa League spot. He could have even had his hat-trick in the second half had Fernando Amorebieta not blocked his shot in the Bilbao penalty box.
