Copa Libertadores Player of the Week: Oscar
Club: Internacional
Country: Brazil
Age: 20
Role: Midfielder
Achievement: Rising above recent court wrangles to send Inter on the way to a comfortable victory

A popular football truism tells us that a very good player can impress when everything is in his favour, and form and fate combines to help him reach the top of his game. A great player, on the other hand, can reproduce his very best form even when everything seems against him, and turmoil on and off the pitch should make it impossible to focus on the task at hand.

If we are to use this as a frame of reference, then it should not be long before Internacional wonderkid Oscar is ready to join the very best.

The 20-year-old midfielder had to endure a summer of transfer speculation linking him with some of Europe's biggest clubs, and no sooner had the window closed than he was presented with a wholly different challenge to his future.

A Brazilian court ruled that the former Sao Paulo trainee should still belong to his first club, and Inter were faced with the choice of letting one of their most precious gems leave or else pay an exorbitant fee to keep his playing rights.

Most players would struggle to shine with such a weight on their shoulders, but while the Colorado consider their judicial options Oscar stuck to what he knows best, as he inspired the Brazilians to a solid Copa Libertadores win over Juan Aurich. Combining wonderfully as the most withdrawn part of an attacking spine completed by Andres D'Alessandro and Leandro Damiao, the youngster impressed throughout and put the wheels of victory in motion.

The first goal was product of a beautiful passage of play finished off by Oscar himself. A neat exchange with Damiao ripped the Aurich defence open, and the midfielder showed his already famous composure to drill the ball home from the edge of the area and notch the first goal. Jesus Datolo added a second in the dying minutes to assure the triumph, and after a difficult week Inter and Oscar finally had something to smile about in the place where it most counts.

Honourable Mentions

Sebastian Dominguez, Velez Sarsfield
: An outstanding free kick goal was the highlight for the centre-back in a typically commanding performance in defence, as the Argentines crushed Defensor Sporting 3-0 in Montevideo.

Javier Orozco, Cruz Azul: Mexican clubs have not enjoyed the 2012 Libertadores thus far, but thanks to Orozco the DF outfit have proved the exception. The striker's two goals in the first half drove his team past Nacional in Asuncion, a 2-1 victory providing three valuable points away from home.
