Goal.com India Special: I-League Team Of Round 17 - Tolgay Ozbey rescues East Bengal yet again while Jose Barreto proves that old is gold
Goal.com summarizes all the action of the I-League and selects a team from the best performers of round 17.......
By Ayush Srivastava
It was a tense weekend in the I-League, as four of the top five teams faced each other, while there were three derby matches - Mohun Bagan and Pailan Arrows in Kolkata, Dempo SC versus Salgaocar SC in Goa and the Mumbai derby between Mumbai FC and Air India, albeit one held in Pune.
In the first of those derbies, if the game between Mohun Bagan and Pailan Arrows can be classified as one, the Mariners came out triumphant 2-0. The Arrows now remain the last club in the league to not have won a match this season.
Air India meanwhile edged a tense derby against Mumbai FC 1-0, in a game which several times came close to boiling over, and saw a heated exchange of words between the players and staff of the two clubs during, as well as after the game.
In Goa, Dempo and Salgaocar played out a 0-0 draw, although the scoreline really doesn’t do justice to the match in which both the sides missed several sitters.
The other big game of round 17 featured Churchill Brothers and East Bengal. The two title contenders played out a 1-1 draw, with close to nothing to choose between the two teams.
HAL Bangalore reminded their competitors that there is still some life left in them, as they chalked out their first win of the season, beating fellow strugglers Chirag United Kerala 2-0.
On the other hand, Prayag United continue to be the undisputed king of draws, as they shared the spoils with Sporting Clube de Goa in a 2-2 draw.
Pune FC’s draw with Shillong Lajong completes our matchweek review. The game in Shillong saw a good turnout and the Red Lizards needed a goal from the penalty spot to earn a point and keep their unbeaten streak going.
