Why Backing Andy Carroll To Score Less Than Nine Premier League Goals This Season Is Good Value

After a move to Liverpool from Newcastle, the striker has failed to live up to expectations on Merseyside and Jim Knight is backing him not to get into double figures this season

A year on from his blockbuster move to Liverpool, Andy Carroll again finds himself in the glare of the January spotlight – and Sportingbet have moved to offer markets on his goalscoring form this term.

Charged with filling the boots of fan favourite Luis Suarez amidst rumours of a return to hometown club Newcastle, the £35m striker has plenty of work to do to silence his detractors.

Sportingbet make Carroll just 4/5 (1.8) to score eight or less Premier League goals this season, despite his current run in the team and having two strikes already to his name.

There are those who have faith, however, with one punter getting stuck in to the 66/1 (67.0) for him to grab a hat trick at Man City in the week. Personally it proved another disappointing outing for the England international, despite Liverpool’s victory, but those who believe will find 10/11 (1.91) for nine or more strikes appealing.

Crucial to picking a side in the Over/Under market is the enforced absence of Suarez, who has been employed as a lone hitman on several occasions this season.

Already half way through his eight-game ban, however, the Uruguayan will miss only two more Premier League matches due to Liverpool’s cup exploits. Carroll’s time to shine is running out.

A home clash with Stoke and a trip to hapless Bolton are surely his opportunities to stake a claim for a spot alongside Suarez, especially given the return of Steven Gerrard to a more advanced role. Yet under the weight of that price tag, even the seven goals required to reward his backers looks a big ask.
