Chelsea should have exhilarated after their victory against Manchester City but unfortunately, have drawn all three of their matches since. Andre Villas-Boas has stated frustratingly that he has all but given up on winning the EPL title. The Blues evidently lack in two of their departments: the midfield and the defence.

Chelsea’s current midfield line up and squad in general lacks an element of ingenuity, especially through the middle. The deficiency of craftiness and chicanery in the Chelsea midfield is apparent.

The predicament with their defence is that three of Chelsea’s defenders, Ashley Cole, John Terry and Paolo Ferreira are over thirty and Jose Bosingwa will be turning so next year. Only David Luiz (24) and Branislav Ivanović (27) have age on their sides.

Another point to be noted is that Chelsea have the second worst defensive record in the top 6 after Arsenal. The goal difference becomes an important factor towards the end of the season and Chelsea will naturally have to do well in the defensive precinct as well. Therefore it is safe to conclude that the Pensioners are faced with a comparatively ageing and under-performing squad.

For Chelsea, this transfer window is going to be a very important one. Chelsea needs a good, strapping squad, not just a strong first team. The average Chelsea player is 27.58 years old, which is well above the league average of 26.35, and there are players in the current squad who are actually older than Villas-Boas. Thus, they have to get in younger players who are equally effective.

There are two players in particular with whom the Blues have been linked with for a long time now: Juventus’ Miloš Krasić (27) and Bolton’s Gary Cahill (26). Both these players have immense potential to shine at Stamford Bridge and help the Blues win the title they have given up on or at least get closer by turning the draws into wins.

Will Krasic Be A Good Signing For Chelsea Football Club?

Miloš Krasić has been linked with Chelsea since his days with CSKA Moscow and has been identified by Villas-Boas as a key signing. He scored nine goals in 26 games in 2009 to help CSKA to the Russian Cup and was named the Serbian Player of the Year. Juventus got him for £15 million in the summer of 2010 beating the likes of AC Milan and Chelsea.

He was instrumental for Bianconeri in his first season appearing 41 times in total. But the rise of Simon Pepe and Alessandro Matri this season has prevented Krasić from making more appearances for the Old Lady with only seven games to his name.

He is a fast, tricky and a traditional winger. He would provide the ideal crosses and assists to the strikers. The twenty seven year old is quick and intangible and has excellent dribbling skills. He is similar to the former Czech Republic midfield hero Pavel Nedved. Krasić would fit neatly into the Chelsea side.  He usually plays as a right-winger, which would free Daniel Sturridge to move into the centre once Didier Drogba goes to the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Moving onto the centre of defence, John Terry (31) only has a few years left in the tank and Chelsea will be on the look for a strong defender who likes to get forward. Gary Cahill can undoubtedly be the missing spark. He too had been the victim of much speculation throughout the summer transfer window. He was a summer target for many of the top clubs but could not move out then. He is likely to move to Chelsea as Bolton manager Owen Coyle as admitted to dialogues between the two clubs.

Cahill Can Fulfill The Missing Link At Stamford Bridge

Cahill is of a very similar mould to Terry and would be a good fit in the Chelsea back-line alongside Ivanović. The 26 year old is committed and strong. He is a good tackler of the ball and is also quick. He is not scared of taking on the opposition's defenders and reaches up front without any evident difficulties.

If Chelsea gets Cahill, they can sell Alex without stressing about not having a fourth choice centre back. There is an apparent pre-requisite to get a long-term replacement for John Terry because he is obviously not going to be there for the Blues forever and is also facing possible suspension for criminal charges.

Thus these two players will fit in the Chelsea squad comfortably and AVB should really be going for them. The January transfer window can well finally see Villas-Boas reshape the club and take Chelsea from strength to strength.
