thumbnail Hello,

From dogged defenders to goal-hungry wing wizards, Goal.com looks at the most effective, decisive and prolific collaborations in Europe this season

Di Stefano and Puskas, Rush and Dalglish, Romario and Bebeto, Nesta and Cannavaro, Xavi and Iniesta. These are some of the most famous and memorable partnerships in football over the years.

There is nothing more magical than watching a dynamic duo tear defences apart with a supernatural psychic prowess; or seeing two centre-backs form an impenetrable shield all on their own in front of their goalkeeper.

This season, we have been blessed with a selection of outstanding combinations in Europe, none more so than the clinical pairing of Hulk and Falcao, two marksmen who are preparing to wreak havoc again for Porto in Wednesday night's Europa League final against Braga.

Now, Goal.com looks at the best partnerships from the continent's major leagues in the 2010-11 campaign.

Dortmund played an attractive brand of football in 2010-11, but the defining feature of the Bundesliga title-winners was their defence. At the heart were Subotic and Hummels, who carried their fine form from last spring into the new season and maintained their performance throughout the campaign. Led by the indomitable duo, BVB conceded just 22 goals domestically, just one more than the Bundesliga record set by Bayern Munich in 2007-08.

The attacking pair have been outstanding this season for Lorient, despite the club lacking big-name status. Eight of Gameiro's 23 goals has been provided by Amalfitano - the same number of assists that Lionel Messi has given David Villa this term. Only Mesut Ozil has been more prolific in supplying a single player, in the form of team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo. That les Merlus may yet qualify for the Europa League in 2011-12 due to a record finish in Ligue 1 is largely down to this combination, though both look likely to move on in the summer, with some major clubs in the hunt for their services.

Manchester United have flourished this season thanks to a solid defensive unit. Ferdinand may have only played a small handful of games due to his injury problems, but Vidic has become their talisman at the back. Together, they have helped the side keep 33 clean sheets between them when they are on the field, and they boast the stingiest back line in the Champions League this term, shipping in just 0.33 goals per game en route to the final.

This explosive pairing have been scoring for fun at Porto this season. Falcao leads the way with 37 goals in 41 games in all competitions, including a record-breaking 16 in the Europa League alone (17 including the qualifiers). Hulk isn't far behind, netting 35 times in 51 outings. Their goalscoring form has played a huge part in leading the Dragons to the Portuguese Primeira Liga title as well as the final of Europe's second-tier competition.

The Eindhoven giants finished the Eredivisie season as the league's top scorers with 79 goals, 10 of which came in one game against Feyenoord. Their prolific form is largely due to the scintillating runs of wingers Dzsudzsak and Lens in the three-pronged attack that head coach Fred Rutten employed in the first half of the campaign. Together, they supplied their team with 37 assists, one of the best returns anywhere in Europe this term.

Just when you thought Ronaldo couldn't possibly outdo himself after his first season at Madrid, the Portuguese has gone on to blitz a number of the club's illustrious goalscoring records in 2010-11. But he is not the only one at the Bernabeu who has impressed with his stats. His partner-in-crime Ozil has won rave reviews in his debut year, amassing a record number of assists and surpassing the likes of Guti and Luis Figo in the annals of history. Out of his total of 24, the German has supplied 12 directly to Ronaldo.

Thiago Silva and Alessandro Nesta formed an almighty defensive partnership to guide AC Milan to the Scudetto, but it's the combination of Di Natale and the electric Alexis Sanchez that has caught fans' imagination. Both players stand no taller than 170 centimetres, but they have been terrorising teams all season long. Together, they have racked up 40 goals, all in Serie A, as they propel the club towards a Champions League spot. A towering achievement for a modest club such as Udinese.
