Manchester United Comment: Glazer Debt Doesn't Stop Red Devils Looking Like Champions League Favourites
Team excel on the pitch while stands erupt in rebellion
On the pitch, United were on a different level to AC Milan. All of the nerves and mistakes of the first leg were forgotten as they cut through the terribly disappointing Rossoneri outfit to claim a rampaging 4-0 victory.
Wayne Rooney’s brace, which saw him notch 30 goals for the season, made the stands erupt in joy. No such good feeling was afforded to the hated Glazers.
Whether boredom was to blame as the Milan fight back failed to materialise is up for conjecture. Not even the slickest of public relation operations could deny the bile that echoed from each corner of Old Trafford.
An even rarer sight than an attack from Leonardo’s men was a red and white scarf. You couldn’t be blamed for thinking that you were sat in on a Norwich City match rather than a Champions League Second Round decider.
United cranked up the pace in the second period with the kind of incisive attacking play that could take them all the way to another European final when May comes around.
Real Madrid's exit from the competition was greeted enthusiastically, while Barcelona's indifferent form cannot be discounted. Chelsea's lacklustre defeat at San Siro has also put United ahead of their rivals from the King's Road.
Few squads can go toe-to-toe when the Red Devils are on this form. They burst out of the starting line to put in a more impressive 90 minutes than Arsenal's demolition job against Porto last night.
Park Ji-Sung’s emergence in recent months as a player of not only industry, but devastating quality was proven as he finished with aplomb for the third goal. Rooney’s ninth header in a row and slotted strike past Abbiati put United ahead, before Fletcher’s put the gloss on the performance.
This late charge which put Milan to the sword seemed to whip up the fervent home support. A pre-match sit-out failed to occur, though the appearance of anti-Glazer banners and constant volley of furious chants left the owners in no illusion to how they are perceived.
Continue to excel like this, and the mission to prise their grip on the club would be appear to be impossible, however. United are a prime investment to bank on, in rude health in every competition.
Even David Beckham’s cameo only acted as a minor distraction. There was sarcastic booing followed a rapturous reception for the returning hero.
The Los Angeles Galaxy loanee can hold his head up high as Milan’s best performer on a dreadful evening in the north west of England for his colleagues.
Beckham walked off the pitch as part of the United family as the crowd let out a verbal embrace. Any thoughts of a similar reception being given to the other American residents etched in United history can swiftly be forgotten as the battle for Old Trafford continued unabated.
