Best & Worst Of The Week: Good Goals From Ghanaians; Superb Football By Mahindra
Goal.com India's editorial team get together and discuss their bests and worsts of the past week in the world of football.
Rahul Bali: Paresh Shivalkar
The Mahindra United player was on fire when he faced his ex-club. His runs from the left completely opened Air India's defence and played a key role in the 4-0 thrashing.
Atishay Agarwal: Edeh Chidi
Chidi has scored eight goals in the league so far, and seven of them have come in just two games. He was at his best against Pune FC, who are not an easy team to score against, but he made light work of it, scoring his second hat-trick of the season.
Amoy Ghoshal: Diniyar Bilyaletdinov
The Everton midfielder scored two important goals for Russia against Slovenia in the first leg of the World Cup qualifying play-off.
Best Moment:
Rahul Bali: Viva Kerala leading for 72 minutes against Dempo
When you hear that Viva Kerala, the bottom placed side in the I-League, are leading against arguably the most talented team in India, you have to sit up and take notice. In the end, Dempo's class was too much for Viva boys.
Atishay Agarwal: Churchill Brothers going back to the top
Arguably the best team in the country, Churchill were struggling to reach the level they'd set for themselves during pre-season early on in the league, but they look back to at their best now, beating the erstwhile-unbeaten Chirag to go top of the table.
Amoy Ghoshal: New Zealand qualify for the World Cup
The Kiwis will take part in the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1982 after a narrow 1-0 aggregate win over Asia’s Bahrain.
Best Match:
Rahul Bali: Air India - Mahindra
Such was the dominance of Mahindra that Air India would consider themselves lucky that they didn't lose by 10 or 12 goals. It may give the impression that it was a one sided game but the attacking display was worth a watch. A perfect birthday treat for me!
Atishay Agarwal: Air India - Mahindra United
David Booth's wards put in a scintillating display of attacking football, to which Air India had absolutely no answer.
Amoy Ghoshal: Egypt - Algeria
An injury time goal from substitute from Emad Motaeb has forced a one legged playoff to decide which of these two North African countries qualify for South Africa 2010. The match was witnessed by a large crowd in Cairo and had many twists and turns. But African champions Egypt just about managed to win with a two goal margin.
Best Goal:
Rahul Bali: Yusif Yakubu against Shillong Lajong
Subhash Singh created something out of nothing which setup a good chance for Yakubu who found the top corner of the net with a delightful finish.
Atishay Agarwal: Yusif Yakubu against Shillong Lajong
The veteran scored his 98th league goal after some great work down the left from Subhash Singh. He received the ball at the edge of the area, and everyone knew where it was going after that. A crisp strike into the top corner completed a comfortable win for the Kolkata side.
Amoy Ghoshal: Abel Hammond against Shillong Lajong
Nabi played a defence splitting pass using the outside of his foot which setup Hammond one on one with the keeper who found the back of the net with a good finish.
Worst Error:
Rahul Bali: Bimal Ghosh against Mahindra United
Bimal Ghosh made a tactical blunder as he had two players (Ibrahim and Santosh Koli) who hadn't started for his team ever this season. In fact, Ibrahim had been recruited only a few days back. Paresh Shivalkar and Debabrata Roy exposed their weaknesses and Air India had to suffer embarrassment.
Atishay Agarwal: Wailadam Passah against East Bengal
The defender was dwelling on the ball despite Hammond being in hot pursuit, and the inevitable followed. It was the goal that killed Lajong's chances.
Amoy Ghoshal: Sayed Mohammed against New Zealand
Bahrain were presented a golden opportunity to equalize early in the second half as they were awarded a penalty. But Sayed Mohammed’s spot kick was a weak one which was easily saved by Kiwi keeper Mark Paston.
Worst Player:
Rahul Bali: Santosh Koli
His performance was poor and I have already said enough. Bimal Ghosh substituted him at the start of the second half and that says it all.
Atishay Agarwal: Darren Bent
The Sunderland striker did nothing at all to boost his World Cup chances against Brazil.
Amoy Ghoshal: Wes Brown
Brown was finding it difficult to cope with the pace of Brazil's Nilmar and was at fault for conceding the goal.
Worst Match:
Rahul Bali: Mumbai FC - Sporting Clube de Goa
Mumbai FC were the in-form team but they began their attacking intentions only in the latter parts of the game. Sporting came up with very few clear cut opportunities and it turned out to be a drab game.
Atishay Agarwal: Mumbai FC - Sporting Clube de Goa
The Goans produced some sizzling football against Mohun Bagan in the previous round, but were poor on the day. Mumbai FC were no better, and the game could have very well been used as a sedative.
Amoy Ghoshal: Greece - Ukraine
Both teams were cautious as it was the first leg of a World Cup qualifying playoff. It was a game of very few chances in which both defences were on top.
