The 63rd edition of the Santosh Trophy came to an end on Sunday with Goa defeating West Bengal in the final. It finished 0-0 after extra-time and then Goa won the match on penaties as the Bengal players failed to hold their nerves.
6. David Villa Is Not For Sale
On Friday Valencia president Manuel Llorente declared that their star striker David Villa is not for sale. Talks had been going on between them and Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid but there was a disagreement between the two clubs over the transfer fee. FC Barcelona then seemed to throw in their bid and now Valencia have made it clear that the Spanish international striker is not up for sale this summer.
5. Bob Houghton Speaks And Blasts
India coach Bob Houghton spoke on a number of issues related to Indian football and made himself clear on certain matters. He said that he thought that Santosh Trophy was not an important competition in the Indian football calender and that he didn't find Indian international footballers taking part in the competition very appealing. The Englishman also focused on the lack of football infrastructure in India and lamented that even Guus Hiddink or Jose Mourinho cannot help the Indian national team under the current circumstances.
4. Arsenal Sign Thomas Vermaelen
Premier League club Arsenal have completed the signing of defender Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax. The transfer fee is reported to be worth 12 million euros and it is said to be a long-term contract. Vermaelen is essentially a left-footed centre-back who is versatile enough to play as a left-back.
3. Confederations Cup Starts And So Do The Shocks
The FIFA Confederations Cup started on June 14 in South Africa amidst some glorious scenes and the party has been growing vociferously. Although the likes of Spain and Brazil have already booked their place in the semi-finals of the competition and have played some glorious football, Italy suffered a major setback in their bid to reach the last four of the competition when they went down 1-0 to Egypt, their first defeat to an African nation.
2. Barcelona And Real Madrid - The Spit And The Spat
Real Madrid's summer spending spree has earned them some criticisms from some clubs and their archrivals FC Barcelona have been among them. Barca president Joan Laporta has been already speaking highly of Barca's famous youth academy and has been explaining how Madrid buy superstars while they make them. Madrid president Florentino Perez soon came out in public and outlined how Madrid's splashing out of cash to sign superstars is not something disgraceful and how that is going to help everyone concerned.
1. AS Roma To Change Owners
Italian club AS Roma are set to change owners as the Fioranelli group are about to take control of 67% of the shares of the club. It has been reported that on Monday an official declaration will allow the Sensi family to hand over 67% of the shares to the group.
