Comment: Who is India’s Sir Alex Ferguson?

At a time when Sir Alex Ferguson is seen speaking about the referees in almost every post-match conference, let’s look at some (pun intended) of the coaches in the I-League who have done the same...

While many consider coaches’ talk about the officials as a customary affair when the team doesn’t win, I always feel that the coaches speak-up only when they have a case in point. Sir Alex Ferguson has been criticized by various sections of the media for venting his anger on the referees, the fact of the matter is when two decisions go against you in a few days’ time, and it leaves you frustrated watching your team from the bench as you can do nothing about it. In the Premier League too, you do see coaches of almost all clubs speak on this issue when their team has been undone.

The scenario in the I-League is no different and if you actually go to see the number of coaches who weren’t satisfied with the officiating, the results are for all to see!

Armando Colaco (Dempo)

Why Didn't He See It?

His reaction said it all when Sunil Chhetri was denied a penalty in the first half after Rowilson Rodrigues tripped him down. Eventually, Dempo went on to lose their first derby against Churchill Brothers in seven years.

Bimal Ghosh (Air India)

Goggles Are For Me Refs, Not You!

When you do everything right to beat the champions and even score the winning goal, the linesman comes to the rescue for the opposition! You have to see your players being booked for no reason as it happened to Soccor Velho against East Bengal. He has been vocal about the state of refereeing in India.

Carlos Pareira (Churchill Brothers SC)

How Come?

The Brazilian coach was left wondering as to how a penalty was given against his side late in the injury time which Mumbai FC’s Abhishek Yadav converted to deny the champions a win. Two players were sent-off against Viva Kerala and Pareira wasn’t pleased one bit with it.

David Booth (Mahindra United)

Look Back In Anger

The Jeepmen were left wondering as to what went wrong as they were left gobsmacked against Dempo, Chirag United and JCT which saw them earn three instead of full nine points. The Englishman has stated that the referees must be made accountable for what they do as it often hurts the teams.

Derrick Pereira (Pune FC)

What Else Can You Do But Laugh At This World!

By now, it’s fair to say that they have been the Kings of Draws. However, it could have been different had some decisions not gone against them. Pereira opined that the penalties awarded to Churchill Brothers and Shillong Lajong wasn’t fair to his side.

Khalid Jamil (Mumbai FC)

The youngest coach in the I-League felt that his side should have earned a penalty in the very first instance against Air India when Vijith Shetty appeared to have handled the ball. Also, N.D.Opara’s opener against them wasn’t fair as he had clearly handled the ball.

Karim Bencherifa (Mohun Bagan)

Please Please!

The Moroccan spoke of conspiracy theories against his club after several decisions seemed to have gone against them with many of their players being suspended.

Roy Barreto (Sporting Clube De Goa)

Not Sporting Anymore!

Edmilson Marques went down far too easily when surrounded by a couple of Sporting players and the referee pointed to the spot. The decision left the Sporting Clube De Goa coach bemused.

Subrata Bhattacharya (Chirag United)

Relax Boys, I know the decision was wrong!

The most outspoken coach in the I-League is well-known for making strong statements against the referees and this season, despite being on top of the table, his comments were no different.

Sukhwinder Singh (ex-JCT)

What's The Solution?

The Punjab side drew against East Bengal but the turbaned coach spoke as to how his strikers were repeatedly fouled by the Red and Gold’s defenders and no free-kick was awarded.

Stanley Rosario (Shillong Lajong)

I Ain't Smiling Anymore!

Tuboi was fouled right at the start of the game by Deepak Mandal inside the box but the referee chose to ignore! The former India assistant coach didn’t speak much about it but didn’t ignore it altogether as well!

Probably, India is full of Sir Alex Ferguson's!
