SpeakOut: Let’s Be More Pragmatic...

In this edition of SpeakOut, Goal.com looks at the need for being realistic from those in power in order to take Indian football anywhere except gliding down...

Indian Football
We have spoken earlier about professional outlook being missing in the country in almost all spheres of football at least. The attitude and the general aura is that of ‘what’s happening guys?!’

It’s imperative for leaders to have a vision and thereby work on a policy to achieve the same. Yes, therein comes the pragmatic part where you have to approach projects with a sense of practicality rather than keep hoping for the impossible. The real world isn’t for romantics!

Last year, there was a lot of clamour made, on whether Cooperage Stadium was fit for the I-League games. There were a few rounds of inspection and some suggestions were made to have a Production Control Room (PCR) and to ensure that there is a sufficient distance between the players and officials from the crowd.

The state association built a PCR which was razed down later during the I-League thanks to former Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA) president, Kehar Singh. Since then, the Indian FA has forgotten all issues about Cooperage.

  • Have the standards of hosting an I-League game changed this year? If they have, then it does send the wrong message to those involved in the sport.

  • So much was spoken about the need for the ‘A’ licence coaches over the last two years but the topic has gone under the carpet. Why? It’s been decided to give the clubs time to fulfill the criteria’s set by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) which is an essential before an Indian club makes its way into the Asian Champions League (ACL).
  • Why was there so much noise about the ‘A’ and ‘B’ or ‘C’ licence in the first place?! Didn’t we know that none of the clubs in India complete the norms set by the AFC? So why make it an issue in the first place? Why not work constructively with the clubs to take things onto the next level. But for that you need a CEO, which again is a long story!

The talk of the post began when the I-League kicked-off in 2007 and officially the search was announced sometime in June this year! This space isn’t used for criticising but it’s more about bringing out the issues which one doesn’t see at the first instance.

By highlighting these areas, it opens up and broadens the horizons of fans and the concerned authorities; at least that’s the objective! If you ask why the above mentioned things happened they way they did, the reasons would be innumerable.

As one of my seniors said, “There can be a million reasons to not do things, but there has to be just a single reason to do.”

Yes, it sounds pretty unbalanced and still does to me, but seldom does it doesn’t work!
