Feature: A Disgruntled Arsenal Fan Vents...
It’s yet another trophy less season for Arsenal and the Gooners are left with nothing to cheer for than some victories. An Arsenal fan discusses his frustrations and voices an appeal to manager Arsene Wenger...
The last trophy we won was back in 2005 against our famous rivals Manchester United (I could have used other words used by us to describe this club but have to respect the sanctity of this site!). What a team we had...Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires, Patrick Vieira...wow!
That was the Golden generation of players at Arsenal which saw most of us becoming fans of the Gunners. With a free-flowing style of football and Arsene Wenger’s youth over big money players seemed to work.
The squad back then had a healthy mix of players who had the experience to guide the youth which helped the latter find their feet at the club. But then began the clearout. Vieira, Pires, Henry, Campbell, Gilberto Silva, Lauren, Keown, Bergkamp, Cole, Ljungberg and many more.
Every year, we hope that there will be a big name coming to Arsenal in the summer but are left disappointed. It’s not that we don’t back Wenger but just that when you don’t get results, one does tend to get frustrated.
Some of the Arsenal forums, I have been part of having crying that we get a defensive midfielder as neither Song nor Denilson are too experienced to do the job. The 2-1 and 4-1 losses to Chelsea coupled with the twin disasters against Manchester United in the Champions League semis are hard to take.
Almost all the members of the Invincible era are gone and we are left with average youngsters who commit the same mistakes over and over again. Don’t get me wrong. I am not criticizing but just blowing off some steam which has been in me for the last few seasons.
I remember a fellow Arsenal fan telling me that if Wenger doesn’t sign a player in the January market, he would walk naked on the streets! Arshavin’s signing has been a blessing for us. But we need more players of calibre and not just average reserve ones.
It gives me immense pain to see our side go down time and again. We need trophies Wenger...Please don’t disappoint us as ‘In Wenger, we trust’.
As told to Rahul Bali.
