Egypt Defeat Is Italy's First Loss To An African Team

The Azzurri had never before suffered defeat to a team from Africa...

Egypt became the first African team to defeat Italy when they overcame the world champions by a goal to nil in Johannesburg.

The Pharoahs are no stranger to the Italian national side, having been the first African team to meet the Azzurri all the way back in the 1920 Olympic Games. Italy won that fixture 2-1 in Ghent with goals from Guglielmo Brezzi and Adolfo Baloncieri.

Prior to this evening Italy's worst result against an African side was a  draw during the 1982 World Cup. Cameroon's Grgoire Mbida netted an equaliser seconds after Francesco 'Ciccio' Graziani's opener on the hour mark.

A similar result occurred during 2005's friendly with the on-form Cote d'Ivoire, but this was an uncompetitive fixture.

Thus Egypt made history thanks to that solo goal from Mohammed Homos.
