Giuseppe Rossi: I Snubbed Germany 2006 With USA To Play For Italy

The Italian star has revealed that he rejected the chance to play for the USA three years ago...

Giuseppe Rossi - Italy (Grazia Neri)
Italy sensation Giuseppe Rossi admits he snubbed the chance of a guaranteed place with the USA at World Cup 2006 in the hope of playing for the Azzurri.

Rossi was just 18 at the time, and the then coach, Bruce Arena, had called him up. However, the Villarreal hitman turned the chance down, hoping his Italian dream would come true. That dream did come true and he lived it during last night's Confederations Cup win over the USA when he bagged two goals to help his side win their opening Group B game.

"When I was younger Bruce Arena wanted me with him for the USA squad at the World Cup. However, my dream was Italy and I wanted to fulfil that and do more," Rossi told La Gazzetta Dello Sport.

"Youngsters like me always want to do good things for the national side, and I will continue to do so. This is my mentality.

"I have always dreamed of being a professional player and it is easier to do so in Italy."

Italy play Egypt this Thursday and a win will see them through to the semi-final.
