Football fans in the north east are set to witness a World Cup and European Championship winner play in their own backyard as Joan Capdevila could join North East Football Club, which is a joint venture of Bollywood star John Abraham and Shillong Lajong’s Managing Director Larsing Sawyan, Goal can reveal.
Capdevila has had an illustrious career and was an integral part of the Spanish national side which won the Euro 2008 and the World Cup two years later having made 60 appearances for the La Roja. He was also part of the famous Spanish Under-23 side which won the silver medal at the Olympics 2000 in Australia.
He had played for Atletico Madrid and was part of the Villarreal side from 2007 to 2011 who were known to play an attacking brand of football.
The former Benfica left-back last plied his trade for his youth club, Espanyol where he made 31 appearances until the end of last season.
“I’m of a certain age now, everything is coming to an end and I’m conscious of that. I’ll try to play in another league, if the possibility to do so is there, but at the moment, it’s just talk,” he was quoted saying to Espanyol TV.
Capdevila was in Brazil as a commentator during the World Cup for a famous Spanish TV network.
John Abraham remained unavailable for comment though sources close to the franchise confirmed of Capdevila’s prized capture.
