The former England boss believes the beleaguered Manchester United manager's predecessor would have done more to refresh the squad in the summer

Glenn Hoddle believes Sir Alex Ferguson would not have allowed Manchester United to sign just one high-profile player last summer as David Moyes did.

Despite being linked with Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Cesc Fabregas and Ander Herrera, the former Everton boss only brought in Marouane Fellaini for £28 million from his old club.

Hoddle insists one of Ferguson's greatest strengths was knowing when to refresh his squad, and believes he would have acted far more decisively in the transfer window.

“If Sir Alex Ferguson had stayed this season he wouldn’t have just brought one player in. He was the master of rebuilding a team and reshaping a team, so it never had to be totally dismantled,” the former England manager told talkSPORT.

“Sir Alex would have known he had to sign a midfielder last summer. He wouldn’t have allowed just [Marouane] Fellaini to come in. Looking back, that was where David Moyes needed to go out and strengthen the squad.

“Six points [behind fourth place] is nothing, but only if [Robin] Van Persie and [Wayne] Rooney are playing. That's the key. The team I saw play against Chelsea [will struggle to reach the top four].”

Chelsea piled further misery on Moyes as they eased to a 3-1 victory on Sunday to leave United 14 points behind leaders Arsenal in seventh.

But Hoddle thinks United will stand by Moyes for the foreseeable future.

“They have got to give David Moyes time to build something,” he added. “Manchester United have a plan, they gave him a six-year contract.”
