Damiao move to England 'very likely'

The Brazil international has long been a target for the London side and club president Giovanni Luigi says that Spurs are in pole position to sign him, ruling out a move to Napoli
Internacional president Giovanni Luigi says that he has spoken with Tottenham about the potential sale of striker Leandro Damiao and that the Brazil international "is very likely to play games in England in the coming year".

Spurs failed in a last-ditch bid to sign the 23-year-old in the January transfer window, with the Brazilian side intent on holding out for more money.

Reports had linked the striker with Serie A side Napoli recently but the president has ruled them out of the running and given a strong hint that Damiao will move to the Premier League in the summer.

"If a club want a player, they must talk to the president of the club at which that particular player plays and not just deal with the agent - that is not correct behaviour," Luigi told tuttomercatoweb.com.

"Recently we talked with Tottenham, Leandro is very likely to play games in England in the coming year. On the other hand, we can exclude Napoli."

Spurs have only had two first-team strikers available this year and Emmanuel Adebayor has picked up criticism for his performances when first-choice forward Jermain Defoe has missed out through injury.

The north London club are at risk of missing out on a place in the Champions League next year in a tough race for the remaining top-four positions against rivals Arsenal and Chelsea.
