Eriksen hoping to emulate Vertonghen
The Dane has been linked with following his former Ajax team-mate to Tottenham but insists he must show his best form consistently before he is ready to make the move
Ajax midfielder Christian Eriksen insists he must emulate the consistency of Tottenham defender and former team-mate Jan Vertonghen before leaving the Eredivisie. As Goal.com exclusively revealed on Sunday, Spurs have made an enquiry about the Dane's availability with a view to a summer move for his services.
However, the 20-year-old says he will only be worthy of such a transfer after he has learnt everything he can in Netherlands.
"Jan Vertonghen is a good example for me. Last season he played a few bad matches before Christmas as well, but after the winter break he was extremely good every game," he told De Telegraaf.
"I have to show every week that I'm the best. Only when you don't have anything to learn in Netherlands, you have to think about a transfer."
The Middelfart-born attacker went on to concede that he has been unhappy with his performances in fixtures not deemed "big".
"I'm not satisfied yet. Maybe it's usual with young guys like me, but it's not good that I only played well in big games," he continued.
"That would be too easy, because everybody can charge himself for these matches. But it's a good thing that I reach a higher level each time I play these matches.
"Matches against smaller clubs have to be fun as well. It's also about having fun on the pitch. Motivation doesn't come from atmosphere or importance, I have to get this from myself. I have to switch the button."
