The club official revealed that the Wolfsburg midfielder told him that he would like to return to Brazil amid uncertainty over his future at the Volkswagen Arena

Flamengo sporting director Zinho has revealed that Wolfsburg midfielder Diego told him that he would like a move to the Brazilian club in future.

The 27-year-old spent last season at Atletico Madrid, helping Diego Simeone's side win the Europa League, before returning to the Volkswagen Arena, having failed to secure a permanent transfer.

Diego is currently at loggerheads with Felix Magath, Wolfsburg's coach, which was the main reason he left the club on loan, and Zinho made no secret of his desire to bring the player back to his homeland.

The Brazilian midfielder is currently back in the country of his birth to undergo treatment on a knee injury, and met with the club official in the meantime.

"I met Diego and he said to my face that he wants to play for Flamengo. I said Let your dream be to wear the black and red shirt and earn a place in the Brazil squad for the 2014 World Cup," he told AS.

"To me, his arrival at the club would also be a dream. What complicates it is the financial part. We already made a formal offer, but everything has become very difficult.

"For now, I will continue working to strengthen the team, but for Diego to arrive is more than difficult. At the end of the day, we have a wage structure and we can not afford to pay absurd amounts."

Since moving to Europe in 2004, Diego has also represented Porto, Werder Bremen and Werder Bremen.
