thumbnail Hello,

As the two heated rivals get set to lock horns in the Supercoppa Italiana, Goal.com looks at the players who could move to San Siro before the end of the transfer window

ANALYSIS
By Max De Luca

Reigning Serie A champions AC Milan and current Coppa Italia holders Inter are set to renew hostilities in the Supercoppa Italiana on Saturday. The National Stadium in Beijing will provide the backdrop for the latest instalment of the Derby della Madonnina.

Massimiliano Allegri’s men did the double over their city rivals last season, outscoring Inter four goals to none on their way to hoisting the club’s 18th Scudetto.

The match will serve as an important barometer to measure the progress of both teams ahead of the new campaign and reveal where reinforcements are required.

The league winners have brought in the likes of Philippe Mexes, Taye Taiwo and Stephan El Shaarawy so far this summer, but are looking for an extra option in midfield.

Meanwhile, across the city, the cup kings have added players such as Luc Castaignos, Ricardo Alvarez and Jonathan to their squad, but questions remain over their creativity from the middle of the field, while there remains one big target up front.

Below Goal.com looks at some of the names who could join Milan and Inter before the summer transfer window slams shut.

The 'Little Prince' is angling for a move back to Serie A after Juventus failed to exercise the option to make his loan deal permanent at the end of last term. Fiorentina seemed to be in pole position to win the race for the Italy international but the deal hit a snag when the 27-year-old refused to accept another loan move.

Milan have now entered the Aquilani sweepstakes and his agent revealed that he wants to get in touch with Galliani after the Supercoppa to iron out a deal. Aquilani could play in-behind Milan's talented strikers and inject some creativity into the squad in the absence of Andrea Pirlo, who left for Juventus.

Barcelona are in the midst of their summer sardana with Cesc Fabregas, an annual event where Arsenal fans hold their breath, but not their anger, as they wait to see whether or not their beloved captain falls prey to the overtures of the Catalan superstars.

However, quietly in the shadows Milan wait. The Spain international is a highly coveted figure in Via Turati and although a move to San Siro is a real longshot, it would provide a shocking conclusion to the Cesc soap opera.

Having made a plea to Italian clubs to snap him up earlier this year, his current side have asked him to stay on until after the Club World Cup in December. However, his desire to head to Milan could be strong enough to see him join the Rossoneri before the summer window is closed.

He would be a more attacking variant on some of the other targets, and would come at quite a premium to boot, but his transfer is one that many in Lombardy believe is inevitable in the long run. His recent injury issues are not seen as too big a hurdle, and his string of recent assists has only served to further whet the appetite of a large number of Milanisti.

When Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri spoke of a midfield 'Mr X' with "thick hair", a media frenzy started over a possible move for the Slovakian. But nothing materialised in the end, and Hamsik remains a vital part of Napoli's attack ... for the moment.

Having admitted earlier in the summer that Milan would be a great next step for his career, there was talk that superagent Mino Raiola could be set to push things through. Though it seems unlikely that anything could happen this summer due to the stubbornness of Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, Hamsik could be just the player Milan are looking for and they may try to use Raiola to push something through late in the window.

Montolivo seems certain to leave Fiorentina after he refused to extend his contract with the Artemio Franchi outfit. His deal runs out in 2012 and the Tuscan club risk losing him for nothing next year. Galliani and Allegri have both publicly revealed their desire to land the Italy international and the Serie A champions have already submitted two player-plus cash deals that have subsequently been rejected.

The 26-year-old is the most viable option to replace Pirlo and a bid of 10m plus the full rights to Antonio Cassano would likely convince the Fiorentina hierarchy to part ways with their talented midfielder.

There has been a summer full of talk over the future of the Argentine midfielder, but still there's no definitive closure on speculation. Banega has claimed on more than one occasion that he's content to stay with his current side, to the extent that he recently tweeted: "I will stay in Valencia. Happy."

However, a move by Inter to match his €9m (£7.8m) valuation could see Valencia loosen their grip on the 2007 Under-20 World Cup winner, and Banega could well be tempted by the lure of one of Europe's bigger names. His relationship with the Valencia supporters became compromised last week when he was photographed wearing a Real Madrid jersey.

Along with club-mate Lucas, Casemiro has become one of the most linked players of Inter's summer transfer campaign. A holding midfielder who has been likened in characteristics to ex-Juventus man Felipe Melo, Casemiro is seen as a potential replacement for Esteban Cambiasso and/or Thiago Motta in the centre.

With a contract running until 2015, the Brazilian may need quite some prising away from Sao Paulo, meaning a bid running into eight figures might be necessary if Inter are to take their interest further. Nerazzurri sporting director Marco Branca has recently refuted reports that the club have made an offer for Casemiro.

Guarin would be a direct replacement for Wesley Sneijder should the Dutchman choose to leave Inter for an English adventure with Manchester United. The Colombia international pulled the strings in midfield for Porto during the second half of last season and made a vital contribution to the Portuguese outfit in their treble-winning campaign.

The sky's the limit for the 25-year-old playmaker, whose timely goals helped Porto win the Europa League title. His agent recently stated that Guarin does not want to force a move from Porto but would look into his options if the Serie A giants came knocking.

Lucas caught the eye of Inter at the South American Youth Championships in January, where he scored four goals en route to the lifting the title with Brazil. The 18-year-old midfielder has also won four caps with the senior team.

Sao Paulo claim Inter have already made a 25m (£21.7m) offer, while Branca refutes such suggestions. One thing we do know for sure is that the Brazilian outfit are keen to hold on to their crown jewel and could refuse to sell the talented playmaker for less than 80m (£70m), the figure which would trigger the release clause in his contract.

The latest name to be linked with Pinetina is that of the French midfielder. Having turned in an excellent campaign with Rennes in 2010-11, Inter are reportedly willing to offer up to £13m for the 21-year-old. His performances last season led to his being called up for 10 appearances with the French national side, and he was a part of the team which saw off Brazil in February.

Playing at the heart of the midfield in front of the back four, he is another who could be brought in to spell, or even displace, Cambiasso and Thiago Motta should he arrive. He also has decent experience for a player of his age, which could be seen as a notable bonus by the powers that be at Inter.

Tevez would feel right at home with Inter, where an Argentine Asado is just as likely to break out at Appiano Gentile as it is in Buenos Aires. The wantaway Manchester City striker could team up with Samuel Eto'o to form a deadly partnership up front if the Italians cough up the required cash to land the striker and manage to hold on to their current hotshot.

Branca has already met with Tevez and would prefer to sign the 27-year-old on a one-year loan deal with an option to purchase, however, City are holding out for a cash only deal which could see Maicon leave San Siro.
