The Portuguese defender turned down a bigger paycheck from Chelsea as he had set his heart on joining the Spanish side

Real Madrid's recent signing Fabio Coentrao rejected a lucrative offer to join Chelsea, according to news daily AS.

The Portugal international signed for Real Madrid from Benfica last week for €30 million after two impressive seasons at the Estadio da Luz.

Chelsea were reportedly interested in Coentrao as well, but the player's dream to play at the Santiago Bernabeu stood in the way of a move to the Premier League side.

AS suggests that Chelsea were prepared to offer Coentrao a net salary of €4m - twice as much as what he makes at Real Madrid - but the player turned down the proposal, as he never considered a transfer to any club other than the Copa Del Rey holders.
