Dane believes striker needs a 'change of scenery' and feels Jose Mourinho would be able to get the best out of the England international
The England international has come under scrutiny this week after being captured swearing into a television camera, and subsequently picking up a two-match ban for his actions.
Rooney’s behaviour, and punishment, have been the subject of much discussion this week and follow a headline-grabbing season which has seen him attempt to leave Manchester United before performing a dramatic U-turn and signing a new deal with the club.
Speaking to Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet, the United legend admitted that whilst he did not want to see Rooney leave, he thought it may be the best option for the player.
"I think it would be good for him to get away," he said
"It would be good for him to play for and other club. Real Madrid under [Jose] Mourinho, is someone that could handle him and get the best out of him.
"It is painful to say that that the best player you have, which he is at United, he is better off trying something new.
"United will probably not sell him to another English club, but a change of scenery would help."
Rooney’s ban comes in the midst of a hot run of form. The striker followed up his hat-trick against West Ham last weekend with the winner against Chelsea in the Champions League in midweek and is currently ranked 12 in the Castrol EDGE Rankings.
