Chelsea are to offer their young Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic in a makeweight deal to secure the signing of Benfica defender David Luiz, according to the Telegraph.
The Premier League champions have been locked in talks with Benfica over the past week and have reportedly agreed to pay €25 million (£21.5m) for the Brazilian defender, who can also play as a holding midfielder, plus £5m-rated Matic in order to reach the Portuguese club’s demands.
Matic, 22, signed for Chelsea not long after current manager Carlo Ancelotti arrived at Stamford Bridge and is currently on loan at Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem along with Slobodan Rajkovic.
However, it is believed that Benfica were hoping to take left-back Patrick van Aanholt or central defender Jeffrey Bruma but have been told that they are not for sale.
Meanwhile, Carlo Ancelotti is set to let a number of young players leave Stamford Bridge on loan - adding to speculation that the Italian has admitted that the talent fast-tracked to the first-team squad are not ready yet.
Van Aanholt looks set to join Championship side Leicester City on loan while Gael Kakuta has undergone a medical at neighbours Fulham.
Bruma also looks set to leave the club on loan in January as well as Fabio Borini who is a target for Serie A side Parma.
