Valencia’s David Silva is being targeted by Manchester City as they look to build on their fifth placed finish and mastermind a leap into the Champions League next season.

The Daily Mail reports that City are worried Real Madrid will hijack their bid for the Spain midfielder and are likely to act quickly to avoid such an event.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is also a known long time admirer of Silva and may yet swoop. Silva is said to favour a move to Madrid and is put off by City’s lack of Champions League football but Mourinho’s arrival as Real manager has caused all of their summer targets to be reviewed.

Ex-Chelsea and Inter boss Mourinho is said to favour a box-to-box midfielder with a physical presence such as Steven Gerrard or Daniele De Rossi.

Real insiders have been trying to finalise a deal to bring Silva to the Bernabeu since last year and were confident of finally getting their man this summer but it would appear Mourinho’s insistence on full control in the transfer market has changed all that.

Silva’s club Valencia are willing to sell for the right price although formal talks may be put on hold until after the World Cup if they are not completed in the next few days.

Meanwhile City are in the driving seat to secure a deal for Yaya Toure and reunite him with his brother Kolo in the first team at Eastlands.

Although Manchester United and Chelsea are also possible suitors City have made it clear that they are by far the most interested and have shown that he will be a part of their first team plans, a key to any move after his agent,  Dimitri Seluk told the Mirror “Yaya is ready to triumph in the Premier League. He wants to play regularly. This is the problem at Barcelona.”
