Real Madrid director general Jorge Valdano has revealed that the Spanish giants will have to wait until next week before they will be able to confirm the arrival from Inter of Jose Mourinho as the new coach at the Bernabeu.

Reports had indicated that the Portuguese was set to arrive on Friday, but the complexity of negotiations with Inter appears to have slowed the process somewhat.

It had been expected that Mourinho's appointment would be confirmed on Friday after the sacking of previous coach Real coach Manuel Pellegrini on Wednesday.

Talks are ongoing with the clubs yet to reach a compromise on the amount of compensation to be paid to Inter, believed to be worth around £13.6 million (€16m).

"Mourinho will arrive in Madrid, probably next week," Valdano said.

"It'll possibly be Tuesday but Monday is almost impossible.

"The coaching change was necessary."

Meanwhile, Valdano also insisted that striker Gonzalo Higuain, a reported target for Manchester City, was not for sale and neither were the club targeting any other forwards.

"He [Higuain] is under contract for three more years and has been a key man this season, he is not transferable," Valdano told Marca

"We do not need more forwards, we scored 102 goals this season and Benzema didn't play much. Next season Karim is like a new signing."
