According to Spanish sports daily Marca, Real Madrid have whittled their winter transfer prospects down to two players: Fenerbahce's left back Andre Santos, and Benfica central defender David Luiz.

Andre Santos is something of a surprise in the latest rumours linking Madrid to defenders around Europe. The left back is a regular starter for Dunga's Brazilian national team, which won the Confederations Cup last summer, and completed a summer move to Fenerbahce shortly thereafter.

He is reportedly highly rated by Manuel Pellegrini, who is partial to offensive left-backs. Furthermore, Santos would be available in the Champions League as Fenerbahce are disputing the Europa League. The transfer could be worth in the region of €15 million.

The other candidate, Benfica's David Luiz, is one of the big young promises of European football and is the most similar defender to Pepe available in the market. He's fast, six feet two inches tall (1.90m), strong on both feet, good aerially, tactically sound and proficient in scoring goals from set plays. As a bonus, he can also play at both right back and left back. As with Andre Santos, Luiz is available for the Champions League. However, price remains a problem as the player's release clause with Benfica is €50 million.

Having narrowed their shopping list to just two players, Madrid will reportedly take their time before securing a transfer, whichever they end up plumping for.
