Real Madrid are set to launch a January bid for Chelsea centre-back Ricardo Carvalho and will offer striker Ruud van Nistelrooy in exchange, according to a report from The Daily Mail.

Los Blancos are keen to reinforce their rearguard after an injury to defender Pepe, who faces a six-month lay-off after rupturing a ligament in his right knee.

Van Nistelrooy could provide much-needed cover for the Blues during January's African Cup of Nations, when Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou are expected to be away on international duty.

Madrid are also reportedly tracking Everton's Jack Rodwell and Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic, but president Florentino Perez has been a known admirer of Carvalho for years.

He tried to sign the Portuguese international, 31, in 2004 before Chelsea swooped with a £20 million offer.
