Shay Given ‘Agrees’ Manchester City Deal - Report

Manchester City appear to be on the verge of signing Shay Given from Newcastle United.

Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given has reportedly ‘agreed’ to join Manchester City, according to the bastion of reliability that is the Daily Star Sunday.

The tabloid claims that the stopper has agreed the deal and all that is left is for the two clubs to agree on a price.

The paper quotes a Given ‘source’ as saying, ‘‘Shay wants to go to City and as far as he is concerned, his deal is effectively agreed in terms of the wages he’d be paid and even his image rights.

“He could double his pay to £100,000-a-week and sign a contract for three-and-a-half or four-and-a-half years.”

City have already made several bids for Given which have been rejected by Newcastle, who are thought to he holding out for £14 million.

Whilst City might be reluctant to go that high for a goalkeeper, they may be willing to include Michael Johnson, a player Newcastle have previously expressed an interest in signing, as part of the deal.

Should Given finally leave St James’ Park after 12 years, the Magpies will look initially to understudy Steve Harper to replace the Irishman.

Although Harper is out of contract at the club in the summer, the fact he has been an uncomplaining understudy on Tyneside since 1993 suggests he will remain at Newcastle.

However, the Daily Star Sunday also reports that Joe Kinnear will look to replace Given, and have apparently identified 38-year-old David James as the ideal replacement.
