The former Netherlands defender insists his side have every chance of beating the German champions, but only on the proviso that they play to their strengthsFrank de Boer is confident that Ajax can get their Champions League campaign off to a positive start on Tuesday when they face Borussia Dortmund.
The Amsterdam giants begin their quest for glory in Group D of Europe's elite club tournament at Signal Iduna Park, and plan to further their progress this time around following last term's failure to qualify for the knockout stages.
Speaking ahead of his side's clash with the Bundesliga holders, the coach expressed his hope that his players learned from their past experience in the competition and can now showcase their improvement with a fearless showing in Germany.
"The point is that we minimise our number of mistakes," De Boer told Algemeen Dagblad.
"Last year we played quite well against Real Madrid, but after we carelessly lost possession, the ball ended up in the back of our net.
"Hopefully we have learned from this, although not everyone in our team has Champions League experience.
"It is a difficult task, but of course we have a chance - if we dare to play football."
Kick-off between the two sets of league title-winners is scheduled for 20:45CET.
