Mazzone backs Ranieri to lead a Roma revival in both Champions League and Serie A...

Carlo Mazzone believes Roma have what it takes to burst back into life in the Champions League after defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk put their hopes of European glory at odds with objectives at Trigoria.

Speaking to Goal.com the morning after Roma's 3-2 loss, which provoked protests by fans at Trigoria, Mazzone says he has confidence of a turnaround.

"Mamma mia, what a knock, this Roma makes me suffer," Mazzone told Goal.com in Roman dialect.

"It was not nice last night and I was very disappointed, especially for the bitterness from a splendid crowd who never lost hope.

"It's a difficult moment, but Roma must not give up. I hope they can get back soon."

Much of the blame has been heaped on coach Claudio Ranieri, but Mazzone has leapt to his defence.

"Claudio is very prepared, he is an expert and he knows the Roma environment very well," he added.

"He is doing an excellent job, and I think it's the players who are not helping him. I think everyone should stay on the coach's side."
